Brief Summary
|
Physical activity along with consumption of protein supplements to procure health benefits has been trending globally. Proteins play an essential role in human nutrition throughout life, supporting growth in infancy, maintaining and developing a normal nervous system along with sustaining muscle mass and physical capabilities. The recommended daily dose of protein intake for normal persons is 0.83 g protein/kg body weight per day, which represents around 10–12% of total energy intake. Physiological protein requirements may be elevated in athletes in order to maintain adequate protein synthesis and energy production. The need increases along with the increasing intensity and duration of an athletic performance. A recent position statement from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dieticians of America, and the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that physically active individuals should consume 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Apart from various health benefits, protein supplements have certain side effects such as presence of acne, modification of microbiota, cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, and psychiatric diseases. The adverse effect of protein supplements on oral health will lead to increased risk of developing dental caries, plaque accumulation and gingivitis. Among London Olympic game athletes, greater number of participants showed signs of gingivitis and increased incidence of dental caries. On the contrary, in another study, protein supplements was associated with decreased plaque and gingival scores. Hence, the purpose of this study is to find the effect of protein supplements on oral health of athletes in Mysore |
