AV+P – a combination of Audio-Visual Aids and Pamphlets |
This study evaluated four methods of oral hygiene motivation in children for 8 weeks, using disclosing agents to assess plaque levels before and after intervention.
It compared traditional pamphlet-based education, WhatsApp-based audiovisual e-learning, chairside instruction by dental professionals, and a combination of WhatsApp and pamphlets.
Pamphlets offered a tangible reference, while WhatsApp reminders provided continuous multimedia reinforcement.
Their combination addressed diverse learning preferences, enhancing engagement and motivation.
Disclosing agents served as visual tools to identify plaque and encourage better brushing, though their motivational role is underexplored.
The study aimed to determine the most effective single or combined method for improving children’s oral hygiene.

| Comparator Agent |
CM – Chairside Motivation. |
Chairside motivation involves direct, face-to-face interaction between the dentist and child during clinical visits.
It enables personalized instruction, immediate feedback, and correction of brushing techniques.
Clinicians use models or mirrors to demonstrate oral hygiene practices and address individual challenges.
This method helps build rapport, enhancing the child’s understanding and compliance.
The one-on-one approach fosters trust and allows tailored guidance based on the child’s oral condition.
As a result, it is highly effective in initiating and reinforcing positive behavior change |

| Outcome |
TimePoints |
| All four methods improved oral hygiene in children over 8 weeks. Audiovisual aids, especially via WhatsApp, were most effective. Pamphlets were less engaging, while chairside guidance offered real-time feedback. The AV + pamphlet combo showed the best results, supporting blended approaches. |

Brief Summary
|
Oral Hygiene is of paramount importance for the preservation of oral health. Dental plaque is a common problem that occurs in patients of different age groups. One of the main causes of dental plaque is improper brushing and poor oral hygiene which is a source of challenge for the pediatric dentist. In children, due to avoidance of personal dental care it significantly impacts dental health and oral hygiene. Several clinical frameworks have been developed to foster behavior change, such as motivational interviewing, oral hygiene education programs, parental education for awareness regarding oral health maintenance. However, two obstacles can be identified. Firstly, the sustainability of oral hygiene education (OHE), which the patients receive during the consultation. Secondly reinforcement over a period is difficult, thus leading to relapse. |
