A structured diabetes education package |
A diabetes self management education package was designed over a period of two months and will be delivered to the study participants. The package will be delivered to groups of 10 to 12 participants, in two 45-minute sessions, within a month of the enrolment of the participant. It will consist of a ten-minute video to facilitate behavioural change, a flipchart and a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate the seven key areas of self-care behaviours, namely, healthy coping, healthy eating, being active, taking medication, monitoring, problem solving and reducing risks. Demonstration of important self-care behaviour, such as foot care, will be done, and participants will be encouraged to demonstrate the learned skills. Individually suitable diet plans and exercise schedules will also be imparted to the participants. The package will be imparted at baseline, 3 months and 6 months, with participants being followed up for a six-month duration. |

Brief Summary
|
Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSME/S) is an evidence-based, cost-effective package to facilitate informed self-management and decision-making for people with diabetes. There are significant gaps in people’s knowledge about diabetes, which can adversely affect motivation for treatment and self-care adherence. Improvement in self-care activities can reduce the chance of developing complications and early mortality. Access to locally adapted self-management education can change patients’ attitudes about their disease, medication and self-care activities. There is a dearth of studies on the effect of self-management education on diabetes management in India. This study is an attempt to find the effect of a diabetes self management education interventional package on the self care activities among patients with type 2 diabetes. This will help us understand the impact of such a low-cost intervention and understand the feasibility of its implementation in the longer term. |
