Brief Summary
|
Depression is a common mental health
disorder that affects people of all ages, including the elderly population.
However, depression among the geriatric population presents unique challenges
and considerations due to factors such as age-related physiological changes,
loss of social support systems, and the presence of chronic health conditions.
It is important to understand the specific dynamics of depression in the
geriatric population in order to effectively address and support the mental health
needs of older adults.[1]
The geriatric population, typically defined
as individuals aged 65 and older, is growing rapidly worldwide. According to
the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that by 2050, the number
of people aged 60 and above will reach two billion, with a significant increase
in individuals aged 80 and above. With this demographic shift, the prevalence
of depression among older adults is expected to rise, making it a significant
public health concern.
Depression in the geriatric population
often goes undiagnosed or untreated due to several factors. Some older adults
may mistakenly believe that depression is a normal part of aging and fail to
seek help. Additionally, symptoms of depression in older adults can be masked
by other health conditions or mistaken for age-related changes, leading to
under-recognition of the problem. This underdiagnosis and undertreatment of
depression in the geriatric population can have severe consequences, including
reduced quality of life, increased disability, and higher rates of mortality.
Known risk factors for depression in
elderly population are Low socio-economic status, Poor health status, Lack of
social support, Bereavement, Functional disability, Number of chronic
illnesses, Living alone,etc..[2]
Recognizing the factors influencing
geriatric depression helps the healthcare systems and mental health
professionals improving detection, diagnosis, and treatment. In Siddha system of
medicine we can provide good remedies through internal medicine and external
therapies which includes meditation, varmam, yoga and special therapies like
Dharai. Additionally, promoting community engagement, fostering social
connections, and providing accessible mental health services are crucial steps
in supporting the mental well-being of the geriatric population.
In conclusion, depression in the geriatric population is a complex and
significant public health concern. Understanding the unique challenges and risk
factors associated with depression among older adults is crucial for effective
prevention, detection, and treatment. By addressing the mental health needs of
the geriatric population, we can promote healthy aging, enhance overall
well-being, and improve the quality of life for older adults around the world.
This study will elucidate the prevalence of depression and the factors influencing
depression in geriatric population.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of
depression in geriatric population Using
The Geriatric Depression Scale GDS
STUDY DESIGN : This is an cross sectional study of systematic randomized sampling which will be carried out for 6 months in geriatric population reporting at ayothidoss pandithar hospital, National institute of siddha, Chennai-47 with 360 patients as sample size. Patients age with 60 and above of both sex who are willing to give informed consent will be included in this study. Patients with disorders of speech and hearing and who are not willing to sign informed consent form will be excluded from the study.
OUTCOME: The outcome of the study provide a prevalence of depression in Geriatric population by using Geriatric Depression Scale
