Brief Summary
|
Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. An important reason for avoidance of dental procedures in children is needle phobia, defined as an extreme fear and anxiety associated with needles. Children with needle phobia are at risk of presenting fear of healthcare professionals and experience higher levels of pain and fear during dental procedures. To alleviate the pain and fear associated with the needle prick several topical anesthetics like ointments, anesthetic sprays, gels, or adhesive patch are recommended. Other methods like application of cold stimuli on the injection site before local anesthesia (LA) administration were also commonly used as an easy and physiologically effective procedure without any surplus costs. It has been advocated that the cold element might confuse the pain pathway’s reception of signals, allowing for a "masking effect of pain." In addition to the above-mentioned methods other systems like vibrators are used to reduce the pain associated with local anesthetic injection. The present study is to compare the efficacy of intraoral and extraoral vibratory systems and conventional local anesthesia with topical anesthetic gel to evaluate pain perception and anxiety levels in children. |
