Brief Summary
|
Every year, one in three individuals over the age of 65 and 50% of those over
the age of 80 experience a fall. Between 20 and 30 percent of these patients
will sustain moderate to severe injuries that make it difficult for them to
remain at home, need hospitalization, and have a higher chance of dying. More
than 581,000 of the 2.2 million older persons who had nonfatal fall injuries
treated in emergency rooms in the United States in 2009 were admitted to
hospitals. Existing
literature has found a number of variables linked to older persons’ adoption of
fall prevention strategies. Sex, age, education, living and health state,
socioeconomic situation, cognitive impairment, depression, limited mobility,
awareness of fall prevention, and prior experience with falls are some of
these. Fall
prevention has become an important field of research due to the rising
frequency of falls and fall-related injuries. The approach to fall prevention
is similarly multimodal because each patient (and each fall) is unique and may
involve several distinct factors.Typically, teams of geriatricians,
physiotherapists, and occupational therapists carry out all preventative
initiatives (NICE, 2015). These experts collaborate on the development,
implementation, and explicit assessment of fall-prevention techniques used in
clinical settings. Exercise has been proven to be a beneficial fall prevention
method. Physiotherapists are qualified to prescribe exercises with the goal of
preventing falls. Additionally, comprehending the fall-prevention knowledge and
practices among the elderly is essential for conducting successful falls
prevention programs and might aid in knowledge transfer to other developing
nations. Understanding the perceptions of senior
citizens to Fall risk may help tailor fall
interventions and could improve adherence to recommended interventions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate older persons’ knowledge and
practice of fall prevention. |
