Cryotherapy- Cold Saline |
Cold saline is used as a final irrigant of the root canal therapy. The temperature of the saline is 2.5 degree celsius.5 ml of cold saline is used in each canal and irrigated for over a minute. |
Comparator Agent |
Physiologic room temperature saline |
In other group, saline at physiologic room temperature was used as the final irrigant in the root canal treatment. |

Brief Summary
|
Background- Pain management during and after root
canal treatment is one of the most important aspects of endodontic practice.
One of the primary reasons for initiating endodontic treatment is to rid the
patient of the excruciating pain. In order to control this pain and the
potential pain precipitated as a result of endodontic treatment, various
strategies have been devised and one of these include “cryotherapyâ€. It is
based on the principle of extracting heat from the applied area rather than
implementing cold. The use of cryotherapy during endodontic treatment is
gradually becoming pervasive. This study is planned and carried out so as to
test the effectiveness of cryotherapy. Aim- The purpose of this study is to compare and
evaluate the effect on postoperative pain of patients with symptomatic
irreversible pulpitis using cold saline at 2.5ËšC and physiological room
temperature saline as the final irrigant after single-visit root canal
treatment.
Method and Materials- 30 patients to undergo
endodontic treatment in mandibular first molars are selected, on the basis of
predetermined criteria and divided into two groups. Biomechanical preparation is
done and final irrigation is carried out with either 2.5â°C cold saline or
saline at room temperature. Patients will be asked to rate the intensity of
their postoperative pain using visual analogue scale at 6h, 24h and 1 week. |
