Brief Summary
Modification(s)
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among office workers ranges from 50% - 87.9%. Hamstring tightness is a common issue among office workers as they perform sitting for 6-8 hours. Hamstring tightness leads to decreased lumbar lordosis and weak back extensors, further leading to low back pain. The purpose of this study was to assess musculoskeletal disorders and to measure hamstring tightness and back extensor endurance in office workers. This was an observational study and it was carried out in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth and Dhiraj General Hospital. Office workers were first screened by Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire for presence of musculoskeletal disorders. Office workers’ hamstring tightness was measured by Active Knee Extension (AKE) test and back extensor endurance was measured by the Biering-Sorensen test. 75 office workers were included in the study. In which 38 males and 37 females. Office workers’ mean hamstring tightness was Rt 34.37±10.07 degrees, Lt 30.44±11.65 degrees and mean endurance time was 84.15±40.92 sec.The study showed significant positive correlation between MSDs and age (r=0.297,p=0.03), working hours/day (r=0.178,p=0.02), number of hours working in sitting position (r=0.512,p=0.01), work experience (r=0.237,p=0.04), and accumulated PC use (r=0.245,p=0.03). There was a high prevalence of low back pain (45.3%) among all the MSDs and it showed a significant positive correlation with number of hours working in a sitting position (r=0.492,p=0.017), work experience (r=0.408,p=0.032), and accumulated PC use (r=0.380,p=0.044). 66.7 % of office workers reported hamstring tightness & it showed significant positive correlation with age (Rt r=0.410,p=0.043, Lt r=0.380,p value=0.053), number of hours working in sitting position (Rt r=0.990, p=0.002, Lt r=0.890, p value=0.012), and work experience (Rt r=0.799,p value=0.023, Lt r=0.823, p =0.012). Endurance time showed a significant difference (p=0.004) between males and females and females had higher mean endurance than males. Endurance time showed a significant negative correlation with age (r=-0.451,p=0.051), gender (r=-0.329,p=0.004), BMI (r=-0.256,p=0.026), and work experience (r=-0.940,p=0.008). There was no statistically significant correlation (Rt r=0.013, p=0.915, Lt r=-0.021,p=0.855) found between hamstring flexibility and back extensor endurance. There was no statistically significant difference found between hamstring flexibility (Rt p=0.356, Lt p=0.737) and back extensor endurance (p=0.279) in office workers with and without low back pain. So, the study concluded that Low back pain was the most prevalent among all the MSDs. More than half of the office workers reported hamstring tightness. Females had significantly higher mean endurance than males. Hamstring flexibility and back extensor endurance showed no correlation. There was no significant difference found between hamstring flexibility and back extensor endurance in office workers with and without low back pain.
