Brief Summary
|
Acute pancreatitis, which is sudden inflammation of the pancreas, is a common disease requiring hospitalisation. There are various causes of acute pancreatitis, out of which gallstones are the most common cause. Severe acute pancreatitis is not very common (20%) however associated with very high complication and mortality rate compared to mild pancreatitis. If we can predict as to which patients will develop severe pancreatitis, it will help a lot in the management of these patients. Many scoring systems and markers are available for this purpose. In this proposed study various scoring systems (Ranson, Glasgow, BISAP, JSS and MCTSI) will be compared for the prediction of severe acute pancreatitis. All patients of acute gallstone induced pancreatitis presenting to the department of surgery will be included in this study and the above mentioned scores will be calculated for each one of them. These patients will then be observed daily from the day of admission to the day of discharge/death and the severity of acute pancreatitis will be ascertained as per the revised Atlanta classification. This data will be compared to the scoring systems included in this study and the best scoring system to predict severe acute gallstone induced pancreatitis will be determined. This will help a lot in the management of patients with acute gallstone induced pancreatitis in the future. |
