Brief Summary
|
Reproductive and sexual health are the
most fundamental aspects of life[1]. According to WHO, sexual health
and human rights law states that sexual health is very important to promote
physical and emotional health and the well-being of the individuals, families
and couples as well as for the social and economic development of the
communities and the country[2] .
At any point of time a larger proportion
of the global population is contributed by youth. The population of youth aged
18 to 24 years in the year 2012 was 850 million[3]. In the world
every year, a total of 16 million women under the age of 20 years give birth, and
most of the adolescents who give birth are from developing countries[3].
Youth phase is considered to be a
transitional phase from childhood to adulthood. This is the phase where the
youth are exposed to many unhealthy risky behaviors like un protected sex,
having multiple sex partners etc. These unhealthy practice are the once which
contribute to sexual transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, induced abortions and unwanted
pregnancies.
Communication about reproductive and
sexual health (RSH) between parents and children is very important to increase
the awareness and knowledge about RSH, to reduce these risky behaviors and to improve
the utilization of RSH services[4].
India is one of the country with a
high young population[5]. Parents play an important role in children’s
overall growth, development and transition to sexual life. Communication about
RSH issues between parents and children plays role in exchanging the information
about cultural beliefs, role on sexuality, sexual values and behaviors, attitudes
and decision making in future about RSH concerns. Previous studies from
developing countries including India showed that communication between parents
and young adults regarding RSH issues was low[6,7].
This study aims to assess RSH communication between female young
adults and parents in Udupi Taluk.
