Extrinsic foot muscle strengthening exercises |
The alphabets : Subject will be seated keeping the edge of the heel on the floor, draw the alphabets one letter at a time by moving the ankle and using the great toe as the “penâ€. The subject will be asked to do two sets of (A-Z), two to three times a day. Windshield wiper : The subject will be seated with the foot flat on the floor and facing straight ahead, rotates the involved foot to mimic a windshield wiper blade: Pivot the foot outward and touch the inside edge of the foot to the floor. The subject will be asked to rotate it inward and touch the outside of the foot to the floor.
Seated calf raise : The subject will be seated with the involved foot flat on the floor, will be asked to lift the heel as far as possible while keeping the toes on the floor. The subject will be asked to return the heel to the floor.
Single leg stand : The subject will be asked to stand while placing one hand on a table. The subject will be asked to shift some of the weight to the involved foot for 15 seconds. The subject will be asked to gradually increase the amount of weight supported by the involved foot until full body weight is used. |
Comparator Agent |
Foot Posture Index |
comprises of six components :
1. Talar Head Position
2. Curves above and below lateral malleoli
3. inversion and eversion of calcaneus in frontal plane
4. Bulge in the region of talo- navicular joint
5. Congruence of medial longitudinal arch
6. Adduction and abduction of fore-foot on rearfoot
Each item scored as -2, -1, 0, +1, +2.
Where, a negative score indicates more supinated foot posture and positive score indicates pronated foot posture and zero is graded as neutral posture.
Total score will range from -12 to +12.

Intervention |
Intrinsic foot muscles
strengthening exercises |
Short foot exercise: The
short-foot exercise will be
performed by shortening and
raising the medial longitudinal arch by bringing the metatarsal heads toward the calcaneus without flexing the toes or contracting the extrinsic foot muscles.
Toe-spread exercise : The toes-spread-out exercise will be performed by extending
all 5 toes and then
simultaneously abducting all 5
toes.
First-toe and second toe
to fifth-toe extension : First-toe extension will be performed by extending the great toe while
the second to fifth toes
remained on the floor in a
neutral position.
Second- to fifth-toe extension will be performed by extending the second to fifth toes while the great toe remained flat on the floor. |
Comparator Agent |
Navicular Drop Test |
Height of navicular tubercle from the floor will be measured with standard ruler and this is called navicular height in neutral (NHN). The second measurement will be taken in standing (relaxed calcaneal stance) this is called navicular height in standing (NHS). Navicular drop is measured (NHN-NHS). 6-9 mm is normal and more than 10 mm abnormal. |

Brief Summary
|
the purpose of the studt is to find out the best treatment method for foot postural deviations in kathak dancers. Thus in this study both exercises are commpared in order to find out which is the more effective than other ? or both are having the same effect ? 40 subjects will be randomly divided into two groups 20 subjects in each groups . Group A : Intrinsic foot muscles strengthening exercises Group B : Extrinsic foot muscle strengthening exercises The pre and post data measures will be recorded in the assessment form by foot posture index and navicular drop test. The subject will be asked to do 15 repetitions three times a day, Thrice a week for 4 weeks. These exercises will also be progressed for both groups during the intervention period, In the first 2 weeks, Participants will be performed their prescribed exercise in seated position. In the third and fourth weeks, they will be performed it in a standing position. Rechecking of outcome measure after 4 weeks. |
