Brief Summary
|
Although internet is an easily accessible and invaluable resource for both general and health related information , it should be noted that medical information obtained through the internet should not be a substitute for human education and knowledge. The dentist as a health care provider needs to be aware of the gaps in knowledge between internet resources and scientific knowledge and experience related to best practices and allow for open communication with the parents on oral health information available on the intenet .With the data obtained from this study the dentist will become aware of how internet derived dental health information may influence parents regarding the dental health issue in their children and the practice of pediatric dentistry.Although a few studied have been conducted showing the impact of internet on dentistry , very few have been conducted on the influence of internet on the parental decision making . Hence we planned to conduct this study. A study conducted by Brynn KW etal evaluated the use of internet by parents of pediatric patients. This study evaluated whether the information available on internet influenced the patients attitude to healthcare services with the help of the quesionnaire.the study concluded that 64%of the respondents used internet for acessing health care information and it lead to more open discussion on their health concerns with the practitioner or the professional informatics officer. The study brought to light that the patients sought to internet for getting more information , to reduce anxiety in future appointments, to better anticipate medical care provided or due to high cost of the consultations. Harris CE and Chestnut conducted a study on dental patients attending dental hygiene clinics to evaluate the degree to which patients access internet for obtaining information on oral health. They reported that majority of the respondents that is 62% of them used internet to gather oral health information and found it useful to them. Hence by obtaining information from the internet prior to visiting the dentist the parents can play an important part in the decision making process. Furthermore they can have an active participation in the entire dental procedure that is being carried out and they can understand the process better. |
