Brief Summary
|
Periodontitis is a disease of the
periodontium characterized by the irreversible loss of connective tissue
attachment and supporting alveolar bone. 1
The ultimate goal of periodontal
therapy has been the regeneration of the new connective tissue attachment,
i.e., new cementum with inserting collagen fibers, at diseased (denuded) root
surfaces and also, the regrowth of alveolar
bone. 2
Filling of the intrabony defects with
various bone grafts is one of the most widely employed techniques aimed at
restoring the lost attachment. 3
Synthetic Hydroxyapatite (HA-Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2),
due of its chemical similarity with natural bone mineral, is frequently used as
bone grafting material. HA which is
known for its ability to bond with bone4, is not osteoinductive.
Nevertheless, the crystal structure of HA can accommodate substitutions by
various beneficial ions easily, amongst which zinc is a potential candidate.10
Zinc, has a stimulatory effect on
bone formation and mineralization in vivo and vitro 5,6. Zinc acts to
increase bone formation and mineralization, decreases bone resorption,
stimulates alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, in both calvaral organ cultures
and osteoblast cell cultures. 5,7
Though Zinc-hydroxyapatite has been
shown to stimulate bone formation through the actions of zinc ions accelerating
the proliferation and differentiation of osteogenic cells, no work has actually
been directed towards the use of ZnHA for potential applications in dental
fields. 8,10
Hence, the aim of this study will be
to investigate the bone regenerative properties of a Zinc-nano hydroxyapatite
graft in comparison to nano-hydroxyapatite alone in the surgical management of
intrabony defects. |
