Gaze Stability Exercises plus Neck Postural Stability Exercises |
Gaze Stability Exercises will focus on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) training using fixed visual targets. In Week 1, participants will focus on a stationary target while performing horizontal head movements for 1 minute × 5 repetitions with 1-minute rest between repetitions. In Week 2, both horizontal and vertical head movements will be added for 1 minutes × 5 repetitions. In Week 3, speed of head rotation will be progressively increased in both directions for 1 minutes × 5 repetitions. Sessions will be conducted 4 days per week for a total duration of 3 weeks where Neck Postural Stability Exercises will be identical to the comparator group and will include deep cervical flexor strengthening (10 repetitions with 10-second hold, 2 sets), isometric neck contractions in all directions (10 repetitions with 10 second hold, 2 sets), and cervical proprioception training using laser pointer tracking (10 repetitions with 2 sets). Total session duration of Gaze Stability Exercises along Neck Postural Stability Exercises will take 50 minutes. |

Vestibular Habituation Exercises plus Neck Postural Stability Exercises |
Vestibular Habituation Exercises will include graded eye–head coordination and motion desensitization tasks. In Week 1, participants will perform eye movements with head and target stationary and eye–target movements with head stationary for 1 minute × 5 repetitions each, followed by 1minute rest between repetitions. In Week 2, head movement with eyes fixed on a stationary target will be performed for 1 minute × 5 repetitions each with 1minute rest between repetitions In Week 3, coordinated eye, head, and target movements will be performed for 1minute × 5 repetitions with 1minute rest between repetitions. Sessions will be conducted 4 days per week for a total duration of 3 weeks. Neck Postural Stability Exercises will be administered in all sessions and will include deep cervical flexor training (chin tuck against wall – 10 repetitions with 10-second hold, 2 sets), isometric neck exercises in all directions (10 repetitions with 10 second hold, 2 sets), and cervical proprioception training using laser pointer tracking (10 repetitions with 2 sets). Total session duration of Vestibular Habituation Exercises along Neck Postural Stability Exercises will take 50 minutes. |

Individuals reporting motion related symptoms such as drowsiness, reduced alertness,
cold sweats, pallor, excessive salivation, headaches, nausea, vomiting dizziness during
travel (e.g., bus, car, train, boat, and airplane) or during funfair rides and virtual reality |

Brief Summary
|
Motion sickness is a common sensory–vestibular disorder, leading to symptoms
such as nausea, dizziness, headache, fatigue, postural instability, and reduced
functional performance. These symptoms arise due to sensory conflict between
visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive inputs, particularly during travel and
virtual reality exposure. Physiotherapy approaches such as Gaze Stability Exercises
(GSE) and Vestibular Habituation Exercises (VHE) have shown
promising outcomes in reducing motion sensitivity and improving balance. Neck Postural Stability
Exercises (NPSE) further enhance cervical proprioception and
neuromuscular control, contributing to better sensory integration.
This study aims to compare the effectiveness of Gaze Stability Exercises and Vestibular
Habituation Exercises administered along with Neck Postural Stability Exercises
in reducing symptoms of motion sickness.
An experimental
randomized controlled trial design will be employed, comprising
32 participants
aged 18–38 years with moderate level motion sickness.
Participants will be randomly allocated into two groups based on predefined
inclusion and exclusion criteria. Group A will receive Gaze Stability Exercises
plus Neck Postural Stability Exercises, while Group B will receive Vestibular
Habituation Exercises plus Neck Postural Stability Exercises. The intervention
protocol will be administered four sessions per week for three weeks.
Outcome measures including MSAQ, SSQ, and NDI will be recorded at baseline and
post-intervention following controlled VR exposure. Statistical analysis will
be conducted using appropriate methods to determine the significance of
findings.
The study intends to propose a cost-effective, safe, non-pharmacological, and
evidence-based physiotherapeutic approach for the management of
motion sickness. Ethical considerations will be strictly followed, and written informed consent
will be obtained from all participants prior to study initiation. |
