High Intensity Interval Training |
High intensity interval training would be given for a periof of 6 weeks 2 days a week where for the first 4 weeks the participants would jog for four and half minutes and sprint for 30 seconds for a total of 25 minutes and for the last two weeks the participants would jog for 4 minutes and sprint for 30 seconds for a total of 20 minutes |

This study
was undertaken to evaluate the effect
of plyometric training vs high intensity interval training for 6 weeks on
change of direction and speed in recreational football players. 50 recreational
football players between the age group of 15 to 25 years who met the inclusion
criteria were recruited for the study. All the players underwent pre-test and
post-test screening for change of direction and speed where Illinois change of
direction test and 20 meters sprint run test was used. The players were then
allocated to two groups by chit-system, group A underwent plyometric training
and group B underwent high intensity interval group training for 6 weeks. Both high-intensity interval training and plyometric training groups
showed improvements in change of direction and sprint performance from pretest
to post-test. The mean improvement was greater in the high intensity interval
training group (1.17 ± 0.49 s) than in the plyometric group (0.35 ± 0.26 s) for
change of direction, indicating effectiveness of high intensity interval
training in improving change of direction performance. For 20 meters sprint run
test, the plyometric training group demonstrated superior performance with a
lower mean time (3.77 ± 0.33 s) when compared to the high-intensity interval
training group (3.97 ± 0.25 s), indicating effectiveness plyometric training in
improving 20 meters sprint test performance. This study therefore illustrates that 6 weeks
of plyometric training and high intensity interval training improves the change
of direction and speed in recreational football players, but high intensity
interval training brought better outcome compared to plyometric training for
change of direction, and plyometric training brought about better outcome
compared to high intensity interval training for 20 meters sprint run test. The
adaptations of aerobic, anaerobic and neuromuscular systems can be inferred as
probable reasons for a better outcome in change of direction for high intensity
interval training, while for plyometric training better results were yielded
for 20 meters sprint run test can be inferred due to improvements in the
stretch shortening cycle, improvements in the biomechanics of the phases of
sprinting.
