| Intervention |
Soft Skills Training |
This intervention was developed as part of a structured training module for hospital attendants and security personnel at IHBAS, Delhi, with the intent to strengthen their soft skills, communication, and professionalism while dealing with patients and caregivers in a mental health setting. The module was designed after identifying common challenges in psychiatric hospitals—such as poor communication, lack of empathy, patient grievances, and conflict situations—which often lead to stress, dissatisfaction, and escalation.
The training content was built on evidence-based practices, WHO guidelines on patient safety, and communication frameworks in healthcare. It combines lecture-discussion, role plays, demonstrations, case studies, and group reflections to provide both knowledge and experiential learning. Topics were sequenced logically, starting from communication skills, moving through empathy and sensitivity, conflict management, professionalism and ethics, teamwork, and ending with grievance handling and reporting. This progression ensures that participants gradually build core competencies required in patient-facing roles.
There is no control group |

Brief Summary
|
Abstract Background: Effective communication is essential for quality healthcare delivery, particularly in psychiatric settings where hospital attendants and security personnel are often the first point of contact for patients and families. Limited research exists on soft skills training for non-clinical staff in India. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured soft skills training program on improving communication skills, job satisfaction, and confidence levels among hospital attendants and security personnel at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Delhi. Methods: A quantitative, pre-experimental one-group pre-test–post-test design will be used. A purposive sample of 82 participants (hospital attendants and security staff) will be selected. Baseline communication skills, job satisfaction , and confidence level will be assessed. Participants will undergo a 6-hour soft skills training program covering communication techniques, empathy, conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies, and professional boundaries. Post-test assessments will be conducted to evaluate changes. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and Pearson’s correlation. Expected Outcomes: The intervention is anticipated to significantly improve communication skills, job satisfaction, and confidence levels, with positive correlations among these variables. Conclusion: The study seeks to fill a gap in training non-clinical hospital staff in psychiatric settings and could inform context-specific interventions to enhance patient care and staff well-being in similar healthcare environments. |
