Brief Summary
|
This study is a randomized, parallel group clinical trial comparing the efficacy of Scaling and Root Planing With and Without Spirulina Gel in Stage two Periodontitis patients. Spirulina platensis a cyanobacterium approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, offers nutritional and health benefits. Its main components are phycocyanin and carotenoids also known as lipophylic antioxidants. Phycocyanin, a microalgae, well-known for its nutritional and medicinal benefits is utilized globally as a dietary supplement. Phycocyanin reduces oedema, histamine release, myeloperoxidase activity, levels of prostaglandin and leukotriene in the inflamed tissues. These antiinflammatory effects of Phycocyanin may be caused by its scavenging properties towards oxygen reactive species and its inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase activity and on histamine release from mast cells.Spirulina gel application as an adjunct to SRP might be beneficial in wound healing by reducing oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory properties might reduce persistent inflammation in periodontal tissues. In one group of twenty patients were treated with scaling and root planning with spirulina gel and in other group of twenty patients were treated scaling and root planning alone and Primary and secondary outcomes will be measured at baseline and after 3 months |
