Brief Summary
|
Decision-making in spine surgery is not determined
solely by pathology or radiology; patient attitudes play a major role. Two key
psychological constructs influence surgical choices:
- Tomophobia – excessive fear of surgery, anaesthesia, or operative risks.
- Tomophilia – excessive preference for surgical intervention even when
non-operative care may be suitable.
These attitudes affect treatment acceptance,
healthcare utilisation, patient–provider interactions, postoperative
expectations, satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and may contribute to delays
or unnecessary surgeries.
Despite their potential clinical impact, these constructs remain poorly
quantified in spine care, especially in Indian populations. A structured
prospective study is needed to estimate prevalence and understand associated
clinical, demographic, psychological, and radiological factors. |
