Brief Summary
|
Strabismus is a vision disorder where the eyes are not properly aligned with each other when focusing on an object. This means one eye turns inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia), or downward (hypotropia) while the other eye fixates on the object. School is a critical time for developing important visual skills like focusing, eye teaming (coordination between the eyes), and visual perception. Uncorrected vision problems can hinder the development of these skills, potentially leading to learning difficulties. Potential complications of strabismus if left untreated can be severe, affecting both vision development and quality of life like amblyopia, depth perception problems, cosmetic blemish. Uttarakhand state like most states in India have primary health care facilities that are not adequately equipped for eye care delivery hence many patients have to get directly to the tertiary health institution for care. The findings of this study will therefore give a hospital-based representation of the types, prevalence and factors associated with strabismus in school going age group in Kumaun region. This study aims to determine the prevalence of strabismus among children of school going age group (6-14yrs) attending ophthalmology outpatient department in Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital Haldwani, clinicoetiological factors associated with strabismus among children of school-going age group (6-14yrs) attending ophthalmology outpatient department in Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital Haldwani, socioeconomic factors associated with strabismus among children of school-going age group (6-14yrs) attending ophthalmology outpatient department in Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital, Haldwani. This is a Observational Study (Cross-sectional study) with sample size of 108 for a duration of 18 months. Children with any medical condition causing strabismus as a secondary symptom, strabismus secondary to any trauma, nystagmus, mental retardation, history of previous squint surgery, Patients or guardians who will not be willing to participate in the study will be excluded from the study.
