Brief Summary

INTRODUCTION

The prevalence of dental caries in India is 54.16% and is 57% among children of 3-18 years of age. Restoration of teeth involves removal of caries and placement of a bio-compatible material on the tooth. Eggshell contains natural source of calcium and microelements. Calcium and phosphate present in eggshell helps in demineralisation of carious lesion and remineralisation of incipient enamel lesions. Chitosan derived from crustacean source has antimicrobial, bone regeneration properties which is biocompatible. Chitosan has good bonding strength and effectively improves the durability of dental restorations. In this study, chitosan based eggshell nanocomposite is produced.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

Sample size calculated is 60. Based on split mouth technique, children requiring restoration on both the left and right first permanent mandibular molar are included in the study. All the children will receive the formulated chitosan-based egg shell nanocomposite material as base  followed by GIC on one side and standard commercially available DYCAL followed by GIC as restorations on the other side. The type of restoration material to be placed onto the tooth will be decided by flip of a coin. The restorations will be evaluated by two blinded examiners at baseline (after 24 hours), 1 month, 3 months using the FDI criteria. Statistical analysis will be done to determine the effectiveness of the formulated chitosan-based egg shell nanocomposite material.
