Brief Summary  

Balance, or postural control, depends on maintaining stability and orientation by regulating the body’s center of mass relative to the base of support. When exposed to larger perturbations, individuals rely on rapid reactive stepping to prevent loss of balance. The direction of a perturbation plays a crucial role in shaping these stepping responses. Earlier studies have shown that mediolateral disturbances are more destabilizing than anterior–posterior ones, requiring faster and earlier compensatory steps. Lateral perturbations are particularly challenging due to the greater neuromuscular control required for mediolateral stability.

Research also suggests that factors such as testing design and leg dominance may influence the nature of reactive stepping. However, limited evidence exists comparing reactive stepping thresholds between right and left lateral perturbations in healthy young adults. Understanding whether side dominance affects stepping responses may provide insights into balance control mechanisms and support the importance of bilateral assessment and training in clinical settings.

This study aims to analyze and compare the minimum perturbation intensity required to elicit reactive stepping in right and left lateral directions among healthy young adults. It also seeks to determine whether BMI influences stepping threshold. The study will follow an observational design with convenient sampling, involving 68 participants aged 18–26 years. Reactive stepping will be assessed using a moving platform that delivers sudden surface translations. Spatiotemporal parameters of stepping will be recorded and analyzed using video-based motion analysis. Adequate safety precautions, including side guards and a safety rope, will be ensured during all trials.
