This study aims to describe current postoperative fasting practices followed by Indian anaesthesiologists after surgery performed under general anaesthesia. Traditional postoperative feeding is often delayed until return of bowel activity although recent evidence suggests that early oral intake may be safe and beneficial. However there is limited clarity regarding the optimal timing of postoperative feeding especially in the Indian setting.

This prospective cross sectional observational study will be conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire distributed to members of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiology. The survey will collect information on postoperative fasting duration for clear fluids and solid food in adult and paediatric patients with ASA physical status one to three undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia. Additional information regarding factors influencing feeding decisions methods used to assess bowel motility and awareness of existing guidelines or institutional protocols will also be collected.

The study will be conducted over a period of three months and aims to obtain responses from at least three hundred and eighty four participants. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistical methods. The findings of this study are expected to provide insight into prevailing postoperative fasting practices in India and may help identify areas where further research or guideline development is required.
