Brief Summary

The research titled “The Effect of Resistance Exercise Training on Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Sleep, Coping, and Mood of Early Adulthood: A Randomized Controlled Trial” seeks to evaluate the psychological benefits of a structured resistance exercise training (RET) program among young adults aged 20–30 years.

Early adulthood is a critical stage often marked by academic, occupational, and social pressures that can lead to emotional distress, poor sleep, and maladaptive coping. The study aims to explore resistance exercise as a non-pharmacological, accessible, and cost-effective intervention to enhance mental well-being.

A total of 108 participants will be randomly allocated to two groups:

  • Experimental Group: Undergoes an 8-week supervised RET program, conducted twice weekly for 50 minutes per session.

  • Control Group: Placed on a waitlist and does not receive any intervention during the study period but will be offered the same program after completion.

The intervention follows American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Each session includes warm-up, main strength exercises (bench press, squat, deadlift, leg press, etc.), and cool-down, supervised by a certified fitness trainer to ensure safety and consistency.

Psychological outcomes will be assessed using standardized measures—Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Profile of Mood States (POMS), and Brief COPE Inventory—administered before and after the intervention.

The study hypothesizes that participants who undergo resistance training will show significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress, along with improved sleep quality, mood stability, and adaptive coping skills, compared to the control group.

The findings are expected to provide empirical evidence supporting resistance exercise training as an effective strategy for promoting psychological well-being and resilience among young adults, contributing to preventive mental health and holistic wellness initiatives.
