Brief Summary
|
This study aims to develop and validate a tool to measure communication partners’ knowledge and attitudes toward the psychosocial effects of hearing loss in middle-aged adults. The initial development of the questionnaire will be carried out through an extensive literature review to identify relevant domains and generate items. Following this, a focus group discussion (FGD) will be conducted involving communication partners, audiologists, and a psychologist to explore issues, experiences, and awareness related to hearing loss. This session will be audio-recorded, and written informed consent will be obtained from all participants prior to their involvement. The inputs from the FGD will guide the modification and refinement of the questionnaire. A second FGD will then be conducted with a different panel of experts, to carry out content validation and ensure clarity, relevance, and comprehensiveness of the tool. FGDs might take around 30 minutes to 1 hour. Subsequently, the validated questionnaire will be pilot tested on 30 communication partners of middle-aged adults with hearing loss to assess clarity, feasibility, and internal consistency reliability. The communication partners of individuals with hearing impairment who visit Department of Speech and Hearing, Kasturba Hospital for routine audiological evaluation and hearing aid trial/ finetuning will be recruited. Participants will be chosen if they fit into the inclusion criteria and consent to the study. After consenting to the study the developed questionnaire will be administered to the participants. Thematic analysis will be used for FGD data, while descriptive statistics and reliability analysis will be conducted for pilot testing data. The developed tool will be culturally relevant and aid in improving the psychosocial health of the PHI and CP. The questionnaire can be a tool for spreading awareness to the communication partners regarding the psychosocial effects of hearing loss. |
