6. BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK
6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY
Dreams are commonly experienced during sleep and appear real at the moment. They are subjective and help in understanding the patient’s emotions, aiding in accurate case analysis. Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud emphasized the unity of body and mind and considered dreams as gateways to the unconscious. In homoeopathy, dreams have been considered important since Hahnemann’s time. Repertories contain numerous dream rubrics, highlighting their significance in identifying the patient’s mental state and prescribing the simillimum. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate whether understanding dreams has relevance in homoeopathic practice.
6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Dreams occur during sleep and represent a form of mental activity. The study of dreams is called oneirology. While awake, a person gathers experiences that may later manifest as conflicts in dreams. These expressions are vital for understanding a patient’s psyche. Dreams, especially vivid or repetitive ones, can reveal suppressed emotions and desires. REM sleep is primarily associated with dreaming. Freud emphasized the importance of every dream detail. Hahnemann in Aphorism 211 and Kent both stressed the importance of mental symptoms in remedy selection. Dreams can be instrumental in understanding a patient’s subconscious and emotional state.
The Complete Repertory, based on Kent’s work and expanded by Dr Roger van Zandvoort and others, includes extensive rubrics on dreams under the Mind chapter. It surpasses Kent’s Repertory in both number and detail, making it more effective in dream analysis for remedy selection. It includes over 5000 rubrics related to dreams and remedies from various sources, enhancing accuracy in finding the similimum. The repertory contains data from numerous homoeopathic texts and journals and offers a highly refined tool for studying dreams in clinical practice.
