Brief Summary
|
Cardiac arrest is a significant cause of death and has
emerged as a major public health issue across the globe. The mortality in
sudden cardiac arrest in India is approximately 4280/100,000 in contrast to 60–151/100,000
inhabitants in the United States. It also accounts for more than 60% of all
cardiac deaths. Every minute’s delay in resuscitation of the cardiac arrest
victim reduces the chance of survival by 7%–10%. However, if CPR is performed
immediately by someone nearby, the chance of survival of victims can double or
triple.1
Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) course
trains participants to promptly recognize life-threatening emergencies, give
high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide
early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)2. Adequate
knowledge and awareness about Cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) must be
mandatory for the healthcare workers which will in turn lead to huge impact on
patient’s survival.
Cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) is a crucial medical technique that is performed manually
to preserve intact brain function. Early initiation of CPR manoeuvres and
activation of the chain of survival are key factors in the prognosis of
patients with cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA). Inadequacy in any step of CPR due
to a lack of knowledge or skill is associated with a poor return of spontaneous
circulation and a decreased survival rate.3
Paramedical staff/ paramedics encompasses nurses,
therapists, technicians, and other ancillary personnel involved in medical
care but is frequently applied specifically to highly trained persons who
share with physicians the direct responsibility for patient care.4 To
our knowledge, there is currently limited research on Knowledge, Attitude and
Practice (KAP) regarding CPR among paramedical staff in north India. To gain a
better understanding of the latest status of paramedics about the knowledge of
CPR we plan to conduct an online survey in tertiary care centres.
In the present study, we will conduct an online survey
with the objective to analyse the level of KAP regarding CPR among paramedical
staff working at tertiary care centres. This information will provide a useful
reference for planning timely training sessions. Also, it may provide baseline
information for other researchers and health professional who are interested in
same area. |
