Brief Summary

The study titled "Association of Palatal Depth with Molar Inclination in Hyperdivergent, Hypodivergent, and Normodivergent Subjects: A CBCT Study" aims to explore the correlation between palatal depth and molar inclination across different craniofacial skeletal patterns using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Introduction:

Facial aesthetics and dental occlusion are influenced by craniofacial morphology, particularly palatal depth and molar inclination. Palatal depth is categorized using Korkhous’ Palatal Index (1939) as high (>22 mm), moderate (19–22 mm), or shallow (<19 mm). Traditional methods fail to account for molar inclination, which can impact orthodontic diagnosis. CBCT provides precise 3D imaging, enabling a detailed understanding of the relationship between palatal depth and molar inclination.

Research Objectives:

  • To assess palatal vault depth in hyperdivergent, hypodivergent, and normodivergent skeletal patterns.
  • To evaluate maxillary molar inclination (buccal, lingual, or upright) in relation to palatal depth.
  • To analyze how palatal depth affects molar inclination.

Research Methodology:

  • Study Type: Cross-sectional, analytical study.
  • Study Setting: Conducted at Ranjeet Deshmukh Dental College and Research Centre.
  • Sample Size: 75 subjects (25 per skeletal pattern group).
  • Inclusion Criteria: Patients (18–30 years) undergoing CBCT for orthodontic treatment.
  • Exclusion Criteria: Previous orthodontic treatment, congenital abnormalities, syndromes, missing/restored maxillary first molar.
  • Data Analysis: Statistical tests (One-way ANOVA, Pearson’s chi-square test) using STATA software.

Significance & Research Gap:

Past studies have explored craniofacial morphology and molar inclination, but limited research compares all three skeletal patterns using standardized CBCT techniques. This study aims to fill that gap.

Expected Outcome:

A clearer understanding of how palatal depth influences molar inclination, aiding in improved orthodontic treatment planning, particularly for cases requiring arch expansion.

Study Timeline: 18 months (9 months data collection, 6 months analysis, 3 months conclusion).
