Brief Summary  

Disasters—whether natural or man-made—affect millions worldwide, causing loss of life, injury, and displacement, while disrupting communities’ progress toward sustainable development. Disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies aim to minimize these impacts, aligning closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (ensuring healthy lives) and SDG 11 (making cities and communities sustainable and resilient).

Physiotherapists, as healthcare professionals, play a pivotal role in disaster management and recovery. From providing rehabilitation to disaster victims to contributing to community resilience, their role is indispensable. However, little is known about the specific skills and knowledge physiotherapists need to effectively participate in DRR activities. This study focuses on understanding these competencies to strengthen their contributions to achieving the SDGs.

2. Objectives

  1. To assess the existing knowledge and disaster risk reduction skills among physiotherapists.
  2. To identify gaps in their competencies that may hinder effective disaster management practices.
  3. To explore how physiotherapists’ roles align with global sustainable development initiatives, especially SDG 3 and SDG 11.
  4. To provide actionable recommendations for integrating DRR principles into physiotherapy training and practice.

3. Rationale

Disaster preparedness and management require a multidisciplinary approach, and healthcare professionals are at the forefront of these efforts. Physiotherapists, with their expertise in rehabilitation and recovery, are essential in minimizing the long-term impacts of disasters. Yet, there is limited understanding of how well-prepared physiotherapists are to handle these challenges.

This study fills a critical gap by exploring the disaster risk reduction competencies of physiotherapists. The findings will inform educational programs, ensuring future physiotherapists are well-equipped to contribute to DRR initiatives. By doing so, it not only strengthens healthcare systems but also furthers the SDGs’ goals of building resilient and sustainable communities.
