1Comparator ArmProcedure-Conventional Panchakarma Training (Procedure Reference: , Procedure details: Conventional Learning Method for B.A.M.S Students 30 B.A.M.S. students will receive traditional, lecture-based instruction for the same training modules. Among these 30 students, 15 students from Second Prof. B.A.M.S & 15 students from Final B.A.M.S. will undergo training together for all theoretical sessions. For Practical session, as per conventional training norms, 15 students will be trained in separate sessions. 1) Shloka Memorization 45 minutes daily for 30 days (Day 1–30), 2) Procedure Skills (Abhyanga & Patra Pinda Sweda) for 6 days (Day 1–6) 3) Patient Assessment Skills (Agni & Koshtha Pareeksha) for 6 days (Day 7–12) 4) Clinical Decision-Making Skills (Indication/Contraindication) for 6 days (Day 13–18) & 5) Patient Counseling Skills (Do’s & Don’ts of Panchakarma) for 6 days (Day 19–24). All these sessions, except Shloka memorisation, will be a 30-minute session per day. Before the PAL based intervention, both groups will simultaneously receive a one-week session (one hour/day) on basics of Panchakarma before undergoing training for skills.))
2Intervention ArmProcedure-PAL METHOD (Procedure Reference: , Procedure details: Peer Assisted Learning Method for B.A.M.S Students 30 B.A.M.S. students will receive Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) in five types of training modules. Six groups of five students will be formed. The six groups consist of three ‘near-peer’ groups (Final B.A.M.S Students training 2nd Prof. Students), & three ‘peer-peer’ groups (Final B.A.M.S Students training their classmates). The five training modules are: 1) Shloka Memorization 45 minutes daily for 30 days (Day 1–30), 2) Procedure Skills (Abhyanga & Patra Pinda Sweda) for 6 days (Day 1–6) 3) Patient Assessment Skills (Agni & Koshtha Pareeksha) for 6 days (Day 7–12) 4) Clinical Decision-Making Skills (Indication/Contraindication) for 6 days (Day 13–18) & 5) Patient Counseling Skills (Do’s & Don’ts of Panchakarma) for 6 days (Day 19–24). All these sessions, except Shloka memorisation, will be a 30-minute session per day with near-peer & peer-peer groups Before the PAL based intervention, both groups will simultaneously receive a one-week session (one hour/day) on basics of Panchakarma before undergoing training for skills.)

Brief Summary

Although numerous studies have evaluated the benefits of the PAL method in contemporary clinical training, evidence remains scarce in the context of Ayurveda education. With the introduction of formative assessment in Indian medical education using observational tools such as DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills), and Objectively Structured Clinical/Practical Examination (OSCE/OSPE), the training of medical students has become more skill oriented than ever before.[6]

In Panchakarma clinical training of B.A.M.S education, there are various aspects that contribute to better development of procedural skills. These include Samhita verse memorization, patient assessment, clinical decision-making, procedural skills, and patient counseling which can train the candidate comprehensively and develop the required efficiency.

Given these multifaceted requirements, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PAL in enhancing these competencies in Panchakarma training for B.A.M.S. students. Through this research, we intend to contribute valuable insights into the application of PAL in Ayurveda education, helping to refine instructional methods for better skill acquisition and clinical competency.
