Brief Summary
|
Emergency medicine is a critical field within healthcare,
dedicated to the immediate decision-making and action necessary to prevent
death or any further disability, which wasn’t until very recently recognised as
an established medical specialty. Emergency medicine stands as the
first line of defence, providing critical care and saving countless lives. From
the sudden onset of acute illnesses to the devastating impact of traumatic
injuries, emergency medicine is the unsung hero of the healthcare system.
Despite its vital role, possibly owing to being a new academic discipline in
India, emergency medicine remains shrouded in mystery, with many unaware of its
scope, services, and significance. There remains a significant knowledge gap among the general
population regarding the scope and functions of emergency medicine as a
specialty. This gap can have far-reaching consequences, leading
to delayed care, inadequate utilisation of resources, and compromised health
outcomes. It is crucial that we bridge this gap, ensuring that the public
understands the importance of emergency medicine and its life-saving
capabilities. This study aims to shed light on the public’s awareness and
perceptions of emergency medicine, seeking to understand the intricacies of
their knowledge, attitudes, and experiences. By exploring the dynamics of
public understanding, we hope to identify areas of strength and weakness,
ultimately informing strategies to enhance awareness, promote education, and
improve healthcare outcomes. |
