Brief Summary
|
Aim: To study the knowledge and attitudes of older adults towards dementia in Udupi district Justification for study: In India, the ageing population and prevalence of dementia is increasing. As recommended by the WHO action plan towards dementia for public health 2017-2025, increasing awareness is important for early detection of dementia. There are rising cases of dementia and older adults are the major population being affected by this condition. Any health related symptoms are either identified by themselves or their spouses who are also aged. Also, persons with dementia are most likely cared for by their spouses. Knowledge and attitude towards dementia would influence the early identification and management of dementia, the quality of care provided by older caregivers and may also influence the stigma and anxiety associated with diagnosis of dementia in older adults themselves, family members or others in the community. There is limited research on this aspect in India and there is a need to study the knowledge and attitudes among Indian older adults as they are the population at risk. Procedure: Permission will be sought from the local older adult association, temple/church and other associations from Udupi and Manipal. Older adults at these places will be explained about the study. Interested participants will be screened for the inclusion criteria and written consent from older adults will be obtained. Study participants will be asked to use their visual or hearing aids, if any. Demographic details will be collected such as name, age, gender, socio-economic status, education and exposure/experience with the people diagnosed with dementia. Dementia Attitude Scale will be administered to the participant based on their fluency in the languages (English/kannada). Once the data is collected, it will be analyzed by finding an association between the attitudes of older adults and the factors mentioned (such as age, gender, socio-economic status, education and exposure or experience with the people diagnosed with dementia).
