Brief Summary   The greatest majority of patients with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance have metabolic syndrome. The presence of metabolic syndrome in these populations relates to a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease than in patients who have type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance who do not have the syndrome.
Individuals with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die of cardiovascular disease as those who do not, and their risk of an acute myocardial infarction or stroke is threefold higher. With appropriate cardiac rehabilitation and changes in lifestyle the prevalence of syndrome can be reduced.
